Asset infrastructure planning

UPL provides a range of network design and planning services associated with managing a DNO’s asset base, asset replacement and network reinforcement.

• Compliance with a DNO’s design policy/ guidance
• Reinforcement options appraisals
• Specification of distribution system equipment in accordance with DNO standards
• Network design – utilising DNO-approved tools for both overhead line and underground cables at all voltages, up to and including 132kV
• Design of schemes to accommodate:

- Asset replacement
- Refurbishment/ reinforcement of overhead line networks including switchgear and transformers at all voltages
- Network modifications including the optimised positioning of remote protective devices, such as auto-reclosers and fused spurs etc
- Underground cable networks across the full range of power distribution cables and associated auxiliaries
- Optimising network configuration

• System design studies: fault level studies in compliance with G74 in the UK (IEC909 in Europe) and resolution of localised abnormal load problems
• Protection studies: UPL has the expertise to assess system protection and ensure adequate reliability and security
• Sub-station design
• Earthing design
• These services are specifically designed to assist DNOs in meeting their regulatory commitments for asset investment agreed in their five year plans, in addition to facilitating improved network performance.
