A two-week long conference on climate change has opened in the Danish capital Copenhagen this morning. More than 100 delegates from across the world are expected to attend the event, which is intended to supplant the 1997 Kyoto protocol. Negotiations at Copenhagen begin today and more than 100 world leaders will arrive next week to discuss issues such as emissions targets and financial measures to combat global climate change.
Speakers at the opening session will include Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Rajendra Pachauri, head of the UN's panel of climate experts. World leaders who have pledged to attend include US President Barack Obama, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
