Due to a rise in wholesale electricity and gas prices, a comparison website has predicted that the ‘Big Six’ will increase their prices by around 20% this year, causing concern that end users could be forced to turn off altogether in order to keep costs low.
Uswitch Director of Consumer Policy, Ann Robinson, stated "Any rises would be devastating. Most people only just survived last winter with 80% rationing their energy use.
"If costs go up any more, people will be too scared to turn the heating on."
With some domestic households paying up to £1500 a year for heating their homes, consumers may result to turning off their energy supplies to be able to afford to live.
